Is Corporate Tax Filing Mandatory in UAE?
A plain-English guide for UAE small businesses on whether corporate tax filing is mandatory, who must register, when returns are due, and how to keep clean books all year.
Published 27 August 2026 · 6 min read
The short answer
- Yes. If your business is a taxable person under UAE Corporate Tax, both registration and an annual return are mandatory, even if your tax works out to 0%.
- Corporate Tax applies to financial years starting on or after 1 June 2023, administered by the Federal Tax Authority (FTA).
- The rate is 0% on taxable income up to AED 375,000 and 9% on the portion above, but you still have to file to claim the 0% band.
- The return is due within 9 months of the end of your tax period, and there is no separate filing for the same period.
- Small Business Relief and free zone status do not remove the filing duty — you register and file to elect or qualify.
The short answer: yes, filing is mandatory
UAE Corporate Tax is a federal tax on the profits of businesses, introduced for financial years starting on or after 1 June 2023 and overseen by the Federal Tax Authority (FTA). If your business is treated as a taxable person, you must register for Corporate Tax, obtain a Corporate Tax Registration Number, and file an annual Corporate Tax return.
A common misunderstanding is that a small profit means you do not have to file. That is not how it works. The 0% band on taxable income up to AED 375,000 is a rate, not an exemption from filing. You have to submit a return to apply that 0% band and to show the FTA how you arrived at your figure.
This is general information — confirm current rules with the Federal Tax Authority or a qualified local tax professional before you act on your own situation.
Corporate Tax is not the same as VAT
Both taxes are run by the FTA, so it is easy to mix them up, but they are separate obligations with separate registrations and returns.
VAT is a tax on sales and purchases, filed periodically (usually quarterly) using the VAT return, and only applies once you cross the registration threshold. Corporate Tax is a tax on your annual profit, filed once per tax period. You can be registered for one and not the other, and you may well need to handle both.
- VAT: tax on transactions, periodic returns, threshold based on taxable supplies.
- Corporate Tax: tax on annual profit, one return per tax period, registration required for taxable persons.
- Different registration numbers, different deadlines, same authority (FTA).
Who has to register and file
Most businesses operating in the UAE fall within the scope of Corporate Tax, but the details depend on your legal form and activity. The safest approach is to assume you are in scope and confirm the specifics with the FTA or your accountant.
- UAE companies and other juridical persons (including mainland LLCs) that carry on business.
- Free zone persons — being in a free zone does not exempt you from registering and filing; qualifying free zone persons still file to access their 0% treatment.
- Natural persons (individuals) running a business or business activity where turnover exceeds AED 1 million in a calendar year.
- Businesses that expect a 0% result, are loss-making, or are claiming Small Business Relief still register and still file.
Deadlines you cannot miss
Corporate Tax works on your tax period, which is normally your financial year. The key deadline is the return: it must be filed, and any tax paid, within 9 months of the end of that tax period.
For example, a business with a financial year ending 31 December 2024 has a tax period that runs the calendar year, so its return and payment are due by 30 September 2025. Registration deadlines are set separately by the FTA and depend on your circumstances, so check yours early — late registration and late filing can both carry penalties.
- Return and payment: within 9 months of the end of your tax period.
- One combined return per tax period — there is no separate second filing for the same year.
- Register before your deadline; do not wait until the return is due.
- Keep records and supporting documents for the period the FTA requires.
Small Business Relief and the 0% band
The UAE offers Small Business Relief, which lets eligible businesses with revenue at or below AED 3 million in the relevant and previous tax periods be treated as having no taxable income for that period. It is designed to ease the burden on smaller businesses, but it is not automatic and it does not switch off your filing duty.
To use it, you must be registered and you must elect for the relief in your Corporate Tax return. In other words, you still file — you just file claiming the relief. The same logic applies to the 0% band on the first AED 375,000 of taxable income: it is claimed through the return, not by staying silent.
Eligibility conditions and the availability window can change, so confirm your position with the Federal Tax Authority or a qualified local tax professional.
