Is Corporate Tax Registration Mandatory in the UAE?

A plain-English guide to whether UAE corporate tax registration is mandatory, who has to register with the Federal Tax Authority, and how to stay compliant without the stress.

Published 20 August 2026 · 6 min read

The short answer

  • For most businesses, yes — corporate tax registration with the UAE Federal Tax Authority (FTA) is mandatory, even if you end up owing nothing.
  • The rate is 0% on taxable income up to AED 375,000 and 9% above that, but the registration duty applies regardless of how much you earn.
  • Free zone companies, mainland companies and many self-employed individuals running a business must register.
  • Missing your registration deadline can trigger an AED 10,000 administrative penalty.
  • This is general information — confirm current rules with the FTA or a qualified UAE tax professional before acting.

The short answer

For the large majority of businesses operating in the UAE, corporate tax registration is mandatory. The UAE introduced a federal Corporate Tax that applies to financial years starting on or after 1 June 2023, and it is administered by the Federal Tax Authority (FTA).

Here is the part that surprises many small business owners: registration is required even if your profit is low and even if your final tax bill works out to zero. The 0% band and reliefs affect how much you pay, not whether you need to be registered. Being under a profit threshold does not exempt you from registering.

This is general information — confirm current rules with the FTA or a qualified UAE tax professional, because your specific structure and free zone status can change the details.

Who has to register

The FTA defines taxable persons broadly. In practice, most of the following need a Corporate Tax registration:

  • Mainland UAE companies (LLCs and similar) carrying on business in the Emirates.
  • Free zone companies, including those that expect to qualify for a 0% rate as a Qualifying Free Zone Person — they still register.
  • Individuals (natural persons) conducting a business or business activity in the UAE above the annual turnover threshold set by Cabinet Decision.
  • Foreign companies that are effectively managed and controlled in the UAE, or that have a permanent establishment here.
  • Branches of UAE companies are generally covered by their parent's registration rather than registering separately.

Corporate tax vs VAT — they are different

It is easy to mix these up because both are run by the FTA. VAT is a tax on sales, with a mandatory VAT registration threshold of AED 375,000 in taxable supplies and a Tax Registration Number used on invoices. Corporate Tax is a tax on business profit.

You can be registered for one and not the other. A small consultancy under the VAT threshold may still need to register for Corporate Tax. Keep the two obligations, returns and deadlines separate in your records so nothing slips through.

This is general information — confirm your VAT and Corporate Tax position with the FTA or a qualified local tax professional.

The rate, thresholds and Small Business Relief

Corporate Tax is charged at 0% on taxable income up to AED 375,000 and 9% on taxable income above that figure. A separate, higher rate framework applies to very large multinational groups, which most small businesses will never touch.

There is also Small Business Relief. Where a resident business has revenue at or below AED 3 million in the relevant and previous tax periods, it may elect to be treated as having no taxable income for that period, subject to the conditions and time limits set by the FTA. You still register and still file — you simply claim the relief.

This is general information — the thresholds, relief conditions and expiry dates change, so verify the current position with the FTA or a qualified UAE tax adviser.

How to register with the FTA

  1. 1

    Gather your documents

Have your trade licence, Emirates ID and passport copies of owners or managers, and your Memorandum of Association or equivalent ready in digital form.

  2. 2

    Log in to EmaraTax

Corporate Tax registration is done online through the FTA's EmaraTax portal. Create or access your account and select the Corporate Tax registration service.

  3. 3

    Complete the application

Enter your business details, activity, financial year, and authorised signatory information, then upload the supporting documents.

  4. 4

    Submit and receive your number

Once the FTA reviews and approves your application, you receive a Corporate Tax registration number. Keep it safe — you will use it on your returns.

  5. 5

    Note your filing dates

Your Corporate Tax return is generally due within nine months of the end of your financial year. Diarise it early so you are never rushing.

Deadlines and penalties

The FTA set specific registration deadlines, and for many businesses these were linked to the month their trade licence was issued. Missing the applicable deadline can trigger an administrative penalty of AED 10,000, so treat registration as a priority rather than a someday task.

Even after you register, staying compliant means keeping proper accounting records, calculating taxable income correctly, and filing on time. Good bookkeeping through the year makes the annual return straightforward instead of a scramble.

This is general information — confirm your exact deadline and any penalties with the FTA or a qualified local tax professional.
