VAT Return Guide UAE: How to File Your VAT201

Everything a UAE small business needs to file a VAT return: what goes on the VAT201, when it is due, how to submit it on EmaraTax, and how to keep records that make filing painless.

The short answer

  • In the UAE you file VAT returns (form VAT201) to the Federal Tax Authority (FTA) through the EmaraTax portal.
  • Most businesses file quarterly; the return and any payment are due by the 28th day of the month after your tax period ends.
  • The standard VAT rate is 5%. You report output VAT collected on sales and reclaim input VAT paid on eligible purchases.
  • Keep every tax invoice, receipt, and record for at least 5 years so your figures are defensible.
  • This is general information; confirm current rules with the FTA or a qualified UAE tax professional.

What a UAE VAT return actually is

A VAT return is a summary you send to the Federal Tax Authority (FTA) telling them how much VAT you charged customers and how much VAT you paid to suppliers over a set period. In the UAE this form is called the VAT201, and you submit it online through the EmaraTax portal.

The core sum is simple. You add up the VAT you collected on your sales (output VAT) and subtract the VAT you paid on eligible business purchases (input VAT). If output is higher, you pay the difference to the FTA. If input is higher, you can request a refund or carry the credit forward.

This guide is general information only. VAT rules and thresholds change, so always confirm the current position with the FTA or a qualified UAE tax professional before you file.

Do you need to be registered?

You must register for VAT once your taxable turnover passes the mandatory threshold of AED 375,000 over the previous 12 months, or if you expect to cross it in the next 30 days. Voluntary registration is available from AED 187,500, which can help newer businesses reclaim input VAT on startup costs.

  • Mandatory registration: AED 375,000 in taxable turnover.
  • Voluntary registration: AED 187,500 in taxable turnover or expenses.
  • Once registered you receive a Tax Registration Number (TRN) that must appear on your tax invoices.
  • The standard VAT rate is 5%; some supplies are zero-rated (0%) and others are exempt, which is a different thing entirely.

Know your tax period and deadline

When you register, the FTA assigns your tax period. Many small businesses file quarterly, while larger turnovers may be asked to file monthly. Your period is shown in your EmaraTax account, so check it rather than assuming.

The return and any payment are both due by the 28th day of the month following the end of your tax period. If the 28th falls on a weekend or public holiday, the deadline usually moves to the next working day. Late filing or late payment can trigger administrative penalties, so treat the date seriously.

How to file your VAT201 on EmaraTax

  1. 1

    Log in to EmaraTax

Sign in at the FTA's EmaraTax portal using your registered credentials or UAE Pass, then open the VAT return that is due for your current tax period.

  2. 2

Enter your sales and output VAT

Report standard-rated sales by emirate, plus any zero-rated and exempt supplies. The 5% output VAT is calculated on your standard-rated figures.

  3. 3

    Enter purchases and input VAT

Add your eligible expenses and the input VAT you paid. Only claim VAT on genuine business costs backed by valid tax invoices, and exclude blocked items such as most entertainment.

  4. 4

    Account for reverse charge

If you imported goods or services, apply the reverse charge mechanism where required so both the output and input sides are reflected correctly.

  5. 5

    Review the net position

The form shows whether you owe VAT or are due a refund. Check every box against your own records before going further.

  6. 6

    Submit and pay

Submit the VAT201, then pay any amount owed through the payment options in EmaraTax before the 28th so the funds clear in time.

Records that make filing easy

Most filing stress comes from scrambling for paperwork at the deadline. The FTA expects you to keep tax invoices, receipts, credit notes, and accounting records for at least five years, and to be able to show how each figure on the VAT201 was built.

  • Valid tax invoices for every sale and purchase, showing your TRN and the VAT amount.
  • A clear split of standard-rated, zero-rated, and exempt supplies.
  • Import documents and reverse-charge calculations.
  • A running total of output and input VAT so nothing is reconstructed from memory.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Missing the 28th deadline because the tax period was misread.
  • Reclaiming input VAT on costs without a valid tax invoice.
  • Reporting standard-rated sales under the wrong emirate.
  • Confusing zero-rated supplies (still reported, at 0%) with exempt supplies (no input VAT recovery).
  • Forgetting the reverse charge on imported goods and services.
  • Leaving reconciliation until filing day instead of keeping books current all year.
