VAT Return UAE: How to File Your VAT201

Everything a UAE small business needs to file a VAT return: how VAT201 works, when it is due, what goes in each box, and how to pay the FTA without stress.

Published 18 August 2026 · 6 min read

The short answer

  • In the UAE, VAT registered businesses file a VAT return called the VAT201 through the FTA's EmaraTax portal.
  • Most small businesses file quarterly; the return and any payment are due by the 28th day after the tax period ends.
  • You report output VAT (on sales) minus input VAT (on purchases) and pay the difference, or claim a refund if input VAT is higher.
  • The standard VAT rate is 5 percent, with some supplies zero rated or exempt.
  • Keep clean records for at least 5 years; good bookkeeping software makes the VAT201 almost fill itself in.

What a VAT return is in the UAE

A VAT return is the periodic report you send to the Federal Tax Authority (FTA) that summarises the VAT you charged on your sales and the VAT you paid on your business purchases. In the UAE this return is officially called the VAT201, and you submit it online through the FTA's EmaraTax portal.

The idea is simple. You collect VAT from customers on behalf of the government (this is your output VAT), and you pay VAT to your own suppliers (this is your input VAT). At the end of each tax period you subtract one from the other. If you collected more than you paid, you send the difference to the FTA. If you paid more than you collected, you can recover the difference.

This is general information, not tax advice. VAT rules change, so confirm current rules with the Federal Tax Authority (FTA) or a qualified local tax professional before you file.

Who has to file and how often

If your business is registered for VAT in the UAE, you must file a VAT201 for every tax period, even if you had no sales in that period. A period with nothing to report is filed as a nil return, but it still has to be submitted on time.

  • Registration is mandatory once your taxable supplies and imports pass AED 375,000 in a 12 month period.
  • You can register voluntarily once you pass AED 187,500 in taxable supplies or expenses.
  • The FTA assigns each business a tax period, usually quarterly for smaller businesses and monthly for larger ones.
  • Your Tax Registration Number (TRN) identifies you on every return and every tax invoice you issue.

Key deadlines you cannot miss

Your VAT return and any payment due are both required by the 28th day of the month following the end of your tax period. For example, a quarter ending 31 March is due by 28 April. If the 28th falls on a weekend or public holiday, the deadline usually moves to the next working day, but do not rely on that as a buffer.

Late filing and late payment both carry penalties from the FTA, and they add up quickly, so it is far cheaper to file early than to catch up later.

How to file your VAT201 step by step

  1. 1

    Log in to EmaraTax

Sign in to the FTA's EmaraTax portal with your registered credentials and open the VAT return for the current tax period.

  2. 2

Report your sales and output VAT

Enter your standard rated sales per emirate, along with zero rated and exempt supplies. The portal calculates the 5 percent output VAT on standard rated sales.

  3. 3

Report your purchases and input VAT

Enter the VAT you paid on eligible business expenses and imports. Only claim input VAT you have valid tax invoices for and that relates to taxable business activity.

  4. 4

    Check the net position

The return shows the net VAT payable or refundable. Review every box against your own records before you submit anything.

  5. 5

    Submit the return

Confirm the declaration and submit. You will get an acknowledgement, and the amount due (if any) becomes payable immediately for that period.

  6. 6

    Pay the FTA

Pay any VAT due through the approved payment channels in EmaraTax by the deadline. Keep the confirmation with your records.

What counts as input VAT you can reclaim

You can generally recover VAT on genuine business costs, as long as you hold a valid tax invoice and the expense relates to making taxable supplies. Some costs are blocked or restricted, so it pays to know the difference before you claim.

  • Reclaimable: stock and raw materials, rent with VAT, professional fees, business equipment, and most operating supplies.
  • Usually blocked: entertainment for non employees and certain motor vehicles available for personal use.
  • Partly recoverable: costs used for both taxable and exempt activities may need apportionment.
  • No valid tax invoice means no input VAT claim, so keep every receipt and supplier invoice.

Common mistakes that trigger penalties

  • Filing late or forgetting a nil return for a quiet period.
  • Mixing up the emirate boxes, since standard rated sales must be split by the emirate where the supply happens.
  • Claiming input VAT without a valid tax invoice or on blocked expenses.
  • Mismatching your VAT figures against your accounting records, which is the fastest way to invite an FTA query.
  • Not keeping records for the required period, which is at least 5 years for most businesses.
